Drive past a fertilizer plant, a cement terminal, a rice mill or a port and you will see them: big woven bags, lifted by forklifts and cranes. FIBC bags have become one of the most useful packaging formats in modern industry because they solve the same problem for very different businesses: how to move a tonne of dry material safely, cheaply and quickly.
But a jumbo bag that works perfectly for sand can be a poor choice for sugar, and a bag designed for sugar can be dangerous for a flammable chemical powder. In this guide we look at how different industries use FIBCs and what features each one needs, based on the questions we hear from customers at Insta Pack.
Why Industries Choose FIBC Bags
Each bag carries 500 to 2,000 kg, replacing dozens of small sacks.
Bags are light, strong and fold flat when empty, saving storage space.
Forklifts and cranes handle them quickly, reducing manual labour.
Size, fabric, coating, liner, loops, top and bottom can all be customised.
They are made from recyclable polypropylene.
FIBC Bag Uses by Industry
Fertilizers
Many fertilizers, including urea, are hygroscopic: they draw moisture from the air and can cake into hard lumps. Jumbo bags for fertilizer usually need coated fabric and often a liner to keep humidity out, plus UV stabilisation if stacks are stored outdoors. Single loop and two loop bags are popular in this sector because several bags can be lifted on one crane hook, which speeds up loading.
Chemicals
Chemical powders and granules, such as resins, pigments and salts, need sift-proof construction to prevent leakage and cross-contamination. Circular bags, coated fabric and liners are common choices. For flammable powders, or filling near flammable vapours, the static protection type (B, C or D) must be chosen through a proper risk assessment. Goods classified as dangerous for transport need UN-certified bags.
Pharmaceuticals
Pharmaceutical ingredients and excipients demand clean manufacturing and contamination control. Bags are usually specified with liners and hygienic construction, and buyers look closely at the supplier's food safety or hygiene management system.
Food and Grains
Rice, sugar, pulses, flour, spices, starch and other food ingredients travel in food-grade jumbo bags. What matters here is hygiene during manufacturing, sift-proof construction for fine products and, where needed, a liner as a moisture and contamination barrier. Baffle bags help exporters load containers more efficiently. Insta Pack's food safety management system is certified to ISO 22000:2018.
Agriculture and Agri-Products
Seeds, animal feed and other farm produce are moved and stored in FIBCs at mills, warehouses and aggregation centres. Agriculture also uses PP ground cover fabric, a woven fabric laid on the soil to suppress weeds while letting water through, widely used in nurseries and horticulture.
Construction
Sand, aggregates, gravel, cement and construction debris are among the heaviest materials handled in FIBCs. U-panel builder bags and tunnel bags are common, with strong fabric and UV stabilisation for bags that sit on open sites. Because these materials are dense, the bag's dimensions and safe working load must be matched carefully.
Mining and Minerals
Ores, mineral powders and concentrates are dense and often abrasive. Mining applications typically need heavier fabric (our range goes up to 240 gsm), strong lifting loops and the correct safety factor. Circular and U-panel constructions are both used, depending on how fine the material is.
Textiles
The textile industry uses FIBCs to move fibre, yarn and textile waste between processes and units. These loads are often bulky but light, so the bags are designed for large volume rather than extreme weight, often with open or duffle tops for easy filling.
Courier and Logistics
Courier and e-commerce hubs use large woven bags to collect, sort and move parcels between facilities. Here, durability over repeated use, easy loading and clear printing for identification matter more than moisture barriers.

One Supplier, Many Industries: How We Customise
Serving so many industries has taught us that the best bag is rarely a standard one; it is the one designed around your product. At Insta Pack we adjust fabric weight (50 to 240 gsm), tube size (300 to 2,200 mm), coating (8 to 60 microns), liners (15 to 120 microns), colour, printing and UV protection, and we choose the construction, loops, top and bottom to suit your filling and handling. Every design is backed by in-house testing in our Silvassa laboratory.
Tell us what you pack, how much goes into each bag and how you handle it, and our team will recommend a specification. Talk to our team at info@instapack.info or +91 70020 74721, or visit www.instapack.info.
